Where is the SYC active?

Our partner, the Saboba Youth Centre, is located in the Saboba District in north-eastern Ghana. There are a total of 254 communities in the Saboba District. The SYC has been working with a number of these communities for many years. To give you a better idea of the geography of this region, we have created an interactive map showing the communities and projects.

Many of the communities are located in the immediate vicinity of Saboba itself, where SYC has its headquarters. Other communities, especially those participating in the tree planting project “Green My Community” (GMC), are located further away. SYC volunteers travel to these by motorbike. These communities are marked on the map with a green tree symbol.

Not all communities are large enough to be found on maps. For example, we know of seven communities that participate in GMC, but we were only able to locate five of them on the map.

The situation is similar with the savings groups (VSLA), which are marked on the map with the pink group symbol. Here, too, there are some savings groups in communities that are blind spots on the map. If you zoom in closer, you will definitely discover some areas with houses. Communities certainly live there, but unfortunately we do not know their names.

The special thing about savings groups is that there can be several groups in one community. The Gbangpanpong community currently tops the list with three savings groups, and in some communities the number has been increased to two this year. There are now a total of 36 savings groups supported by SYC, with five new ones established this year alone.

The GMC project is also growing steadily. In the three years since the project began in 2022, almost 20,000 trees have already been planted, including 6,000 new trees in one community alone.

We have also marked the recently created e-library in Saboba on the map with a blue book icon. The SYC offers courses in basic computer skills to children and young people there. This year's donations enabled the SYC to purchase three new laptops for this purpose.

The latest addition to the SYC's repertoire is the education project. A pilot project was launched with two students from Sambuli R/C Junior High School in Sambuli. Sambuli is located in the south-west of Saboba and is marked on the map with a yellow book stack icon. For these and more latest news, have a look at our update blog post.
